Afternoon Social

Afternoon Social

The afternoon social group is a small group of people who meet together for a chat, cup of tea, play board games, sing, make cards and anything else that interests the participants.

It is run by a group of volunteers and provides a supportive and social atmosphere for people living with dementia, their carers and anyone else who finds it difficult to socialise in large groups.

Book Club

Members suggest books to the group who then decide on the title to be read by next meeting. At the monthly meeting we all have a chance to give our opinion of the chosen read before opening the discussion to the whole group. It’s a great opproptunity to read books that perhaps you would never have thought of reading before. Come and join us.

Cantorian Pontyclun

Cantorian Pontyclun

This is an all Ladies Choir whose main function remains to raise funds for Charities and these include Kidney Research, The Brain Injury Trust, The British Heart Foundation, Bridgend Young Carers and the Alzheimer’s Society.

The Choir has toured in Bratslava and Vienna (2008) and a memorable tour to Krakow, where it sang in several large Cathedrals, the Salt Mines and at Auschwitz (2011). The Choir has also shared the stage with the Bridgend Male Voice Choir and the Ynysown Male Voice Choir and Llantrisant Male Voice Choir.

The Choir meets on a Tuesday evening, 7:30 – 9:30pm, at Café 50. New comers always welcome!

Gardening

Gardening

Meetings last about an hour and we aim to cover a wide range of gardening subjects of interest to both beginners and experienced gardeners. We plan to make two or three visits to gardens each year. Other members are welcome to join us on visits. Transport will usually be on a car share basis.

The Group has in the past discussed topics such as the 17th century Civil War, local place names, the South Wales Coal industry, the Romans in Pontyclun and its surrounding area and the last of Henry VIII’s wives, Catherine Parr, anti-semiticism and Florence Nightingale.

Come along and create your own 3D object, with one barbed needle and a "fluff of wool"

Needle felting is a fun and magical craft. No previous experience is needed and equipment is provided.

Play Reading

In our Play-reading group, we read plays aloud (but we don’t act them out as such).

So far, we have tried Shakespeare through to panto, so we enjoy the serious as well as the amusing plays with plenty of variety.

The atmosphere is relaxed and informal, with a fairly equal balance of women and men. Play-

reading takes place on the 4th Thursday of every month at 1.30.p.m. in Café 50.

Pontyclun Community Council

The Council holds it monthly meetings at Cafe 50 on the 2nd Wednesday of the month from 7pm.

The Counci's working groups also meet regularly at Cafe 50. Members of the public can attend and take part in these meetings which will inform the council on specialist areas such as Local economy; Environment and Social and Cultural events

This is a U3A Spanish learning group open to anyone who already has a knowledge of basic Spanish and who wishes to improve speaking and listening skills. It is not delivered by teachers but by group members willing to teach each other what they know. We are a very small group, meeting from 9 to 10 am on a Thursday morning and the atmosphere is relaxed and fun. New members are very welcome. Come along and join us for a free trial hour. This is a U3A group meeting from 9 to 10 am on Friday mornings. It is open to anyone who would like to learn Spanish from beginners to those with some grasp of the language. It is not delivered by teachers but by group members willing to teach others what they know. We use books, games and the internet to learn and our aim is for a fun and relaxed morning in good company leading to the ability to get by in Spanish. Come along and join us for a free trial hour. Trefoil Guild

Trefoil Guild is a branch of Girlguiding and its members agree to support the guiding ethos. Guild Members do not need to have had previous links with Guiding.

Pontyclun guild has been in existence for over 30 years. We meet on the third Thursday of the month at cafe 50 from 7-9pm.

We are a sociable group with a big range of activities at our meetings - speakers, quizzes, craft, theatre trips and many others.

We are occasionally invited to Guide or Brownie meetings if judges are needed for competition. These are definitely fun! We also support Gorwellion which is the guide site near Porthcawl. some of our member are helping with the archives for our county.

A group of Welsh language learners (with a good knowledge of the language) who meet every Monday to practice their oral skills as well as improve in other areas of the language. It is organised by the University of South Wales
